Backyard Waterfalls: Ready to Take the Plunge?

backyard-waterfallAdding water features, especially a waterfall, can add a wonderful sense of atmosphere and relaxation to your landscape. Water cascading off of rocks is like music and can be quite soothing. Waterfalls can also be very useful to aerate your pond or water garden. With little maintenance, they can create lasting beauty.

At DeVisser Landscape Services, we are ready to help make that idea a reality. Before we get started, there are some things you should consider:

Where Do You Want Your Waterfall?

Do you have a specific space in your yard that you would like to see it? We recommend placing it somewhere that you can see it from indoors so that you can get the most enjoyment out of it. We will help you look for the best location based on elevation as well as gas and water lines.

How loud do you want the waterfall to be?

Determining how loud you want your waterfall to be will help us determine a number of specifics such as how much water should be pumped, how tall it should be, and how wide it should be. Consider if you want to be able to hear it from indoors and if the sound will bother nearby neighbors.

Will it flow into a pond or onto rocks?

If you already have a pond or water garden, this will be an easy decision. However, if you don’t, you’ll have to decide what you want the water to flow into. Some factors to consider are the sound the waterfall will make and what it takes to maintain it.

Waterfalls intended for ponds or water gardens are very beautiful due to the plants and fish that you can incorporate. However, keep in mind that it can be more expensive if you don’t already have a pond and also that it will require a filtration system if you include wildlife.

Pond-less waterfalls offer a low-maintenance option, requiring only for you to add water when it evaporates and drain below the frost line for winterization. It’s also a great option if you want to be able to turn it off for periods of time.

We would be happy to discuss the different options with you so that you make the choice that best suits your wants and needs.
